From the shearing sheds of New England to the leading fashion houses of the world, Australian wool continues to demonstrate its global value, with a recent ultrafine consignment highlighting just how strong this end of the market remains.
Shearer and ultrafine wool producer Josh Fittler is pictured alongside Fox and Lillie Rural’s Matt Wilkinson with an outstanding 11.5-micron fleece which achieved an impressive 100,000 cents per kilogram returning $1,000 for a single fleece. It was part of a consignment assembled and purchased by Fox & Lillie Rural and was ultimately sold into Italy, connecting this exceptional fibre with some of the world’s leading textile fashion houses. It is a result that not only reflects the quality of the fibre but also the continued demand for premium ultrafine wool.
Ultrafine wool sits at the very top end of the market, sought after for its softness, handle and performance in high end garments. Results like this reinforce the connection between the work done on the farm and the expectations on global brands, where consistency, preparation and attention to detail all play a role in achieving premium outcomes.
This fleece is a strong example of what can be achieved through careful breeding, management and classing, combined with the skill of those in the shed. It also highlights the importance of presentation and market alignment, ensuring that exceptional wool is recognised and rewarded accordingly.
For producers, it is an encouraging sign of the strength within the ultrafine sector and the opportunities that exist for well-prepared, high-quality clips. For the broader industry it is another reminder of the reputation Australian wool continues to hold on the world stage.
