Meet Our Wool Representative: Sarah Polderman | Hamilton & Casterton VIC

Meet Sarah Polderman, Fox & Lillie Rural Wool Representative servicing growers across the Hamilton and Casterton region in Western Victoria.

With just over three years at Fox & Lillie Rural and 10 years of experience working in shearing sheds, Sarah brings hands-on industry knowledge, strong relationships with local wool growers and a genuine passion for the Australian wool industry.

From shearing shed visits and helping growers understand their wool clip to catching up with clients on farm, Sarah enjoys every opportunity to work alongside the people who make the industry what it is.

We caught up with Sarah to learn more about her career in wool, what she is hearing from growers and life as a Wool Representative at Fox & Lillie Rural.

How did you first get involved in the wool industry?

A farmer wanted his shearers to have a designated driver, so I got asked to roustabout, even though he didn’t really need one, just so I could drive them home after they’d had a few beverages at knock off!

I ended up staying in the sheds for 10 years.

What do you enjoy most about working with growers?

I really enjoy getting to know them. Every grower is so different and has a different background, so I find it really interesting listening to their stories and perspectives on life.

I also enjoy learning about how they run their farms and the different approaches they take to management.

What are you hearing from growers at the moment?

Everything seems to be going well. A few dams are a bit low, but there is a lot more feed around this year.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to wool growers?

Never be afraid or embarrassed to ask a question. Even if you think it is silly or something you should already know, ask away!

It is my job to not only help you sell your wool but also make sure you understand the paperwork and everything that happens behind the scenes.

What’s the biggest change you’ve seen in the wool industry?

Improvements in facilities, handling equipment and sheep productivity.

What’s something people might not know about being a Wool Representative?

There is a lot of driving and a lot of paperwork!

What’s your favourite part of the job?

I have a few!

Catching up with my clients and having a yap, shearing visits, telling growers their wool has sold above valuations, teaching people something new, like why we brand things a certain way, and patting all the farm dogs.

What keeps you passionate about the wool industry?

My growers.

What’s been one of the most memorable moments in your career?

Going on the Young Brokers Development Program, which included visiting farms and mills around Tasmania, Melbourne and Geelong.

Another was selecting and buying my first lot of rams on behalf of clients who couldn’t make it to the sale. It was terrifying but very memorable! They were all happy too, which was a relief.
